Training

Formal training for managers does not always allow for adequate self assessment and reflection. With Ethica Consulting you can be sure that any course you attend will enable participants to reflect on their own skills and practice in order to develop further in the topic being delivered.

Courses listed below are designed for Managers, team leaders and front line staff depending on their level of experience. Two additional courses have been designed and delivered to tenants in supported housing services.
(All are 1 day courses unless otherwise specified):
  • Managing People (2 days)
  • Managing Professional Boundaries
  • Risk Management in Lone Working
  • Equal Opportunities and Diversity - with Edris Miller - Edris is a blind woman from Guyana who has been leading Disability Awareness training since 2002.
  • Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults
  • Service User Involvement
  • Helping Service Users Learn
PLUS: specifically designed half day courses for service users/clients/tenants:
  • Chairing Meetings
  • Interviewing and Assessment Skills
Comments included:

‘I gained a lot of insight from Edris and her experiences’

‘It was very useful to see that there is no one right way’

‘Inspired me to do my Action Plan, I ran a Christmas pantomime with service users and staff. They were really good, and I really enjoyed that it all worked out We all had a lot of fund and it grew better working relationships and confidence’

If you would like to discuss how we could help your organisation, or you just want to know more, feel free to get in touch.

We have written and delivered bespoke courses on other subjects and have, for example delivered courses on Managing Volunteers, for Portsmouth Council of Community Service and Negotiation Skills for Rethink.

Action Learning Sets
These are a valuable way for managers to develop their own problem solving skills in a supportive small group environment.
Action learning allows each participant some set time to explore a work problem in a group setting. Others are able to help by asking further questions but not ‘telling’ you what to do. In this way each person gains some insight and a solution that they choose for themselves.

Interagency sets have run well in the past as have in house sets for 6-8 managers.

Comments included:

‘I found this one of the best ways of learning I have come across, it was inspiring and a really useful way of gaining knowledge to use in the every day working environment.’

‘The action learning sets have been quite an experience as the members are a diverse group. A great opportunity for getting things off your chest and having some positive ‘outsider’ solutions’
.

Coaching/mentoring
In partnership with The Creative Leadership Project an initiative funded by the South East England Development Agency, Ethica Consulting undertook to run coaching/mentoring sessions for managers who could benefit from some external support in addition to that offered by their employing agency.
Beneficiaries included 42 Chief Executives and managers from a wide variety of not for profit organisations across Kent and Sussex.

Just some of the areas that people received coaching/mentoring in:
  • Action Planning
  • Assertiveness
  • Career development
  • Communication
  • Managing change
  • Managing staff
  • Marketing
  • Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Role of a manager
  • Staff development
  • Stress management
  • Supervision of staff
  • Time management
  • Workload management
Comments included:

‘My current situation was explored carefully. Helen provided encouragement and advice – both timely and extremely relevant. Her support enabled me to progress at an appropriate pace.’

‘I am not sure that I would have ever gone for that [higher paid, senior post] job, let alone get it without the opportunity to review my strengths and improve my confidence with someone who is an objective outsider’.
